Mardi Gras survival guide
Carnival changes with the calendar, and parade routes or times can change too. Use this as a planning checklist, then verify your specific dates with official parade and city sources.
Choose your base around your priorities
Staying near the route can reduce transportation stress, but street crossings may be limited while parades roll. Map your lodging and must-do activities against the current official route before booking.
Pack for a long day outside
Wear comfortable closed-toe shoes and layers you can carry. Bring water, a compact battery, identification and only what you can keep close.
- Use a small secure bag.
- Agree on a meeting point before crowds build.
- Keep children within reach and add a contact card to their pocket.
Move with the city, not against it
Street closures and packed transit are part of the experience. Walk when practical, allow generous travel time and check official transit alerts before every move.
Be a good parade neighbor
Respect barriers, private property and other spectators' space. Follow posted rules, listen to parade officials and leave ladders, furniture or large setups only where current rules allow them.
