Family guide

New Orleans with kids

New Orleans works best for families when each day mixes one anchor attraction with open space, snacks and an easy exit plan. These ideas are intentionally flexible for different ages.

Build around one big outing

Choose one main experience each day rather than racing across town. The Louisiana Children's Museum and City Park can anchor one day; the Audubon Aquarium and riverfront can anchor another.

  • Check admission, age guidance and current hours on each venue's official site.
  • Leave an unscheduled hour after lunch for a reset.
  • Keep rain and heat alternatives nearby.

Make the French Quarter a daytime adventure

In the morning, the Quarter offers architecture, street performers, Jackson Square and easy treats. Royal Street is often a calmer walking choice than Bourbon Street for families.

Use transit as part of the experience

A streetcar ride can double as sightseeing, but service changes and crowds happen. Check the official transit app before leaving and carry a backup rideshare or taxi plan.

Plan for weather and noise

Heat, rain and live music volume can change the day quickly. Carry water and hearing protection, choose shaded breaks, and keep plans shorter during the hottest afternoon hours.
